New Year New resolutions?

Well the advertising I have sent for "A Vocal Journey" manage to capture the targeted audience's attention but didn't create any publicity about the work. I wonder what went wrong?

Filemduatayar was 3rd on search list for "A Vocal Journey"

While hoping "A Vocal Journey" will be a hit in spreading Projek Kalsom's cause, I'm spending my time chilling with my Malaysian friends. Therefore I'm going to blog about development in my work starting with this one post.

Will I be able to somehow make "A Vocal Journey" a hit? It's free to watch, inspiring and most of all it fights for a right cause. Hope it will be a hit.

frost at midnight

Weather last week was pretty bad-to say the least. Woke up at 6 am at one point to find that it was minus 11 -.-
However i must say that that was one of the most beautiful winter days I have ever been in. I was terribly lucky as I initially planned to just hibernate at home - cold weather = duvet + electic blanket day- but was forced to go to school for a seminar.

The following pictures are unfortunately not by me but from an album on Facebook by the uni. To my surprise I found some really good ones by Najib! yay for najib! I only managed to take a few measely photos en route to class. here goes!

The pictures in square format are mine. Don't the pictures make you think of the frost working its 'secret ministry'. Wish I had time to dwell on the way the sunlight sparkles through. It's like God BLINGED up coventry. But one has essays and deadlines to meet before the break so- Boo :(

Unfortunately the ice has melted and its back to the good old gloomy english winter.

p.s. yay for wellies and electric blankets!!

With the UKEC agm just over, I thought it would be a good time to write a little something about it. For those who are feeling a bit lost this is a wiki citation of what it is

The United Kingdom and Éire Council (UKEC) for Malaysian Students is an umbrella body of Malaysian Students Societies in universities and colleges in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

The purposes of the organisation are:
1.To facilitate interaction and friendly relations among the various Malaysian Societies in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland based on the principle of mutual respect.
2. To achieve co-operation in solving problems of a social, cultural and economical character, and in promoting and encouraging respect for the Malaysian way of life and for universal kinship without distinction as to race, sex, language, religion and political affiliation.
3. To provide an outlet for social, cultural and academic activities amongst Societies and to assist the administrative duties of the Malaysian Students Department (MSD), and any of its other functions as may be necessary for the benefit of the Malaysian Students.
4. To be a centre for harmonising the actions of Societies in the attainment of these common ends.

It is ironic however that as a Malaysian student in the UK I feel that UKEC can do nothing for me. Except maybe part 2 of purpose number 3-to assist the administrative duties of the Malaysian Students Department (MSD), and any of its other functions as may be necessary for the benefit of the Malaysian Students. i.e. organise  talks, career fairs and MSLS. Shouldn't an event organising team be then formed to carry out these tasks? As for the other purposes of the organisation- they have impact maybe on a super small percentage of malaysian students in the UK. Isn't it then a bit presumptuous to call itself 'A Supreme Council'- it’s a bit too fanciful/officious  for something that achieves so little. Although I must admit that MSLS is very successful at what it does. Could a more inclusive exco not be formed to organise this?

What I am suggesting is that maybe UKEC was necessary back when it was founded  and when there were but a handful of students in the UK. However in present times it is outmoded and needs to be rethought.

Having been a part of the exec of  the Msian student association  in my own uni, I found that not only was ukec unable to help us- we even had to compete for funds  when writing to firms for sponsorship! I can see why firms would rather give funds to 'an umbrella body' rather than a specific association in hopes that this 'umbrella body' will use the money to benefit those under it. In reality- really they should give the money to specific associations so that our president can host better events for our members and cook yummmy msian food to promote to international students. This top-bottom/trickle-down way of things is super ineffective and a waste of money on a bunch of self-interested, officious members of the exec of you-know-what.  Efficiency of allocation of resources is important.

Also a friend of mine who is just recently part of a new malaysian assoc. at her uni. The assoc. only consisted of 5 members and at the agm one has to vote as to whether or not they should be a part of ukec. ??????????? Seriously? You have to be voted to be in?? Just because its small doesn’t mean that it is pointless to have it recognised. Rights of the majority is important but so is protection of the minority. And what does this act even imply? If you're too small- you don’t count-despite being a bunch of malaysians? SUPER ELITIST BEHAVIOUR!

Some random stuff I found on ukec on wiki:

The summit had also created issues when the boo-incident happened when one of the invited speakers, the then Vice chancellor University of Malaya Datuk Rafiah Salim was greeted with boos and catcalls when she said public university students had the freedom to express their thoughts and ideas.
Hearing their disapproval, Rafiah retorted: "Behaviour like this is exactly what causes people not to respect you. You won’t even give me a hearing. And you won’t get respect." "If you behave like that, nobody will listen to you because it is not worth listening. You are not respecting others."[2]

Lol- siapa yang makan, cili dia yang rasa pedas kan? Why be offended by boos if you have done no wrong. How else could they have shown their dissatisfaction without something totally insane but not improbable happening like being thrown into jail . Of course they would have banked on safety in numbers

Am not here to bring the council down. Just wanted to put my thoughts into form. Because its been bugging me.

And now for my other obsession-

EGGS BENEDICT AND PIERRE HERME MACARONS IN JASMINE!!

Had to learn to make my own eggs benedict because they don't serve them for dinner (except at Dome- yay for dome!). Have yet to perfect hollandaise sauce but am doing ok in the poached eggs department. yay for yanny!

Sadly no I did not take a picture of the jasmine macaron and this picture does not do it justice- It is the lightest sugarplum pink/blush with a pearl finish and melt in your mouth subtle yet full flavour- OMG. Each macaron is a work of art. Too bad they don't do the balsamic vinegar+ chocolate ones  at selfridges. And  too bad good macarons are hard to come by- one has to make a trip to selfridges/Harrods.

Had a super mega fun weekend at Aina's partayyyy! Totally recommend 'Just dance' on Wii  :)
This weekend: stay in and nerd. hopefully can make it to londy's jazz fest next week. fingers crossed!

3rd November morning news

The lack of individual independency could lead to various problems from one generation to another:
These are example of it

When you are too dependent on the government on education and things change.

This is what happens to most people reactions; http://bbc.in/cAuXQ

Then when you are graduated and looking at dependency on the government and the status change leads to

What should we do?
One of it is to start thinking about other independent opportunities like entrepreneurship skills;
Read books like Rich Dad Poor Dad  and learn from business people
while you are still in education institution, its not too late for those who are working.

The New Blog direction

Starting this month we will blog topics related to the main theme of Filemduatayar blog. This also included journal of various Filemduatayar's productions.

We are kicking start with the theme; Mentor and Mistakes
The 1st post is a comic strip related to this month theme.

Enjoy!

Comic Strip: A problem

It's natural for a human to go through hardship and make mistakes

The question we must ask is how do we handle it?
Being Stress or being interested to solve these stress situations.

Yes, you are right about there are so many ways to solve it.
Just pick one and follow through. Like a mission in a game.

You've done a lot and still can't solve the current problem? Accept it and move on.
Forget about your worries regarding other people and focus on reforming yourself.
Your prolonged problem will be gone, it just needs time.
Once your most terrible problem is gone.

That what makes your leisure time more worth it and fun;
Just imagine a normal walk at the park feels like you are flying.
Thats the reward

All the best!

Government pls GET A CLUE!!!

Press release by my boss. interesting read.

Issue: Government imposes 20% entertainment tax on films directed by Malaysians and who have a full Malaysian cast.

According to the Malaysian Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture (Kementrian Penerangan Komunikasi dan Kebudayan), only films that are 60% in Bahasa Kebangsaan are to be considered local films.

This policy not only creates discriminatory problems but it also shows that the ministry has little or no understanding in the development of the arts and media.

Narrow minded thinking and policies will stunt the growth of the local film industry, lower the standards of films being made and limit the creativity of directors.

Such a high tax rate will not prevent films from Hollywood or Bollywood from entering the market but it will prevent the entry of multi-lingual local films.

The Central Government is constantly promoting the idea of 1-Malaysia and yet it is not reflected in their policies even in just the difference in use of language.

A recent case – the making of the film ‘Ice Kacang, Puppy Love’ clearly reflects that the government does not encourage the growth of the local film industry. The production crew, cast and directors were all Malaysian but it was categorized as a foreign film

As a Malaysian, this makes me feel embarrassed and disappointed that the central government does not place any value on Malaysian productions.

If we look at South Korea, the government invests and subsidizes heavily on their local film industry and helps to promote their films throughout Asia. Film productions are not just for entertainment purposes but also reflect the local cultures and social understandings of a society.

For example, the Korean film ‘Tai Cheong Kim’ brought thousands of foreign tourists and has greatly profited the tourist industry. Other than that, even food that has been introduced through the film has become part of our local urban culture. Why doesn’t our own government see any of these benefits?

DAPSY suggests that the government should abolish the 20% tax on the sale of tickets and to properly redefine all local films.

P.S. it would be interesting to see Korean/Taiwanese/Japanese fangirls clamouring to KL for a bite of curry puff or lontong or keropok lekor! we just need to glam up our food like they did!

Prototype Masuyo Ten137 Production Diaries 1

Only two weeks into our (official) summer holiday and Khairul was already itching to do something. Anything really. Which usually results in-yes! You’ve got it!- a videO!
Problem: He’s going on a trip soon............
Solution: Challenging him to make something in 7 days

T:-6  & -5 saw Khairul researching furiously for some ideas  to make a film with! Came up with 4 stories with different themes (i’m just going to state the themes here)
1.       Political errors+miscommunication creates havoc. It’s worth paying the price to practice in the long run (short run costs may be too much for some)
2.       Racism.
3.       Are you willing to risk helping the unfortunate given some pretty big risks
4.       Mentorship+individual personality. Problems that come normal education institution in the long run. Why is it ineffective most of the time.

T:-4 - picks the fourth story. Yay! Faiez agrees to be in film

T: -3- Got carried away with writing script. Too much to shoot in a day. Whoops. Actress cancels on us T.T time for some DAMAGE CONTROL but zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

T: -2
Faiez arrived at 12.Back up actress does not. shareen: heh heh heh. Khairul and Faiez write something about what music means to Faiez (who is also a composer) to be shot.

1.30 pm; nadzra, shukri and Falah arrived. Finished shooting interviews in an hour (yay for efficiency!!! Or were we missing something)
Went to shoot outdoors in the drizzle. Battery dies
So they decide to go to a mamak instead. Malaysian solutions are the best ones. (especially if they involve phood)
Came back in an hour to resume shooting! Yay for more efficiency!

T: -1
Khairul pulled an all nighter and completed editing the video! Faiez goes home.
Project –COMPLETE. Big Thanks to all who helped out! You know who you are

T:0
Yan writes blog post. Khairul is debating whether to send this video for festivals or online viral video.
We go to A&W.
Yay for efficiency!

Project code name: Prototype Masuyo Ten-137 Production (Diary: 14th June 2010)

A prototype fictional narrative documentary short film.

As of yesterday, Project code name: Prototype Masuyo Ten-137 Production officially began....

The challenge of this project is to write.direct.produce the short prototype fictional narrative documentary in 7 days.

This is where the magic starts. (The sweet tin on the foreground is from a movie, guess what movie, if its right, the 1st person to get it right, you'll get RM50 and a copy of the movie) - hint; its a japanese movie in the 1980s, goodluck!)

I will be writing a few pages of script on:
The prototype short film synopsis is about “a female university student reports the development of her continuous efforts in mentoring three high school students, according to their own personalities, to achieve overall growth in social, academy, etc; in addition and comparison to their growth in formal educational institution.”

Hopefully I will find people who are free either from this Friday and next Monday for a one day shoot to fill in:
Actor:      1) Female, age 20 – 30 (as University student)
                2) 2 males, age 15 – 25 (as High school students)
                3) Female, age 15 – 25 (as High school students)

Production crew;     1) Director of photography
                                                2) Makeup artist
                                                3) Production designer/art director
                                                4) Production manager
                                                5) Sound operator
                                                6) Still photographer

Post-production crew;            1) Editor
                                                                2) Sound composer
                                                                3) Journalist

These are the other challenge; it will be fun as well to work with a team who never work together before to produce a quality story. Plus it will be a worthwhile experience which added to your CV/resume.
So will I find them? Will this project lift of?

Find out on the next diary of Prototype Masuyo Ten-137 Production

Bofana Bofana

Hello beautifully ladies and handsomely gentlemen.

Since I’ve lost connection with internet last May, haven’t been able to do this until today.

I hope you have enjoyed the last 29 days of 2010 world cup tournament. That packs with surprises. As well as arousing our adrenaline during the matches.

Well early this morning, Germany won the third place, although they broke their tradition of winning the world cup every 20 years for 3 times, they are about to set another hat trick that will create a new tradition; winning the 3rd place in World cup. They’ve done it since hosting in 2006, beating Portugal 3-1 and this morning 2010 world cup, beaten Uruguay 3-2. The question is, will they make it 3rd place 2014? Haha! A fact to look forward to in Brazil World Cup 2014.

For those who supported Germany, here’s a little uplifting entertainment for you =)
(Well, actually it suited those who love jokes about ze german)
So, here’s the classic Hitler parody about the world cup 2010 issue; The Vuvuzela

The 2nd video I’ve been enjoying it recently. It’s about Stalin finds out about the hitler parody videos.
Stalin’s speech:  http://bit.ly/922psh

Well, the last one is simply, how to make them; “Hitler and Friend Explain How To Make Hitler Parody.”

So, I hope you enjoy the links, if you watched em, it is still funny to watch again =)

Enjoy tonight’s game, THE RED HOT FINAL! RED VS ORANGE! Spain against Holland

Teeth sinking into heart

It seems to me that at uni, 2 weeks before my exams
I have somehow forgotten how to prepare for an exam.
As if my brain has somehow unlearned the skill.
yay for me!

I wanted to buy this arcrylic book rack. But it costs 40 pounds.
WHY???
I have always had this strong attraction to stuff made out of acrylic: magazine holders, staplers, shoes (omg acrylic wedges by stuart weitzman!!) , random boxes, chairs, chandeliers, violins!
Just like how I am attracted to black shiny things i.e. black patent leather/ super nice plastic stuff (namely a chanel compact).
Maybe the sense of touch is the most powerful. Thats why we become obsessed with materials.

Got a book on time management. Read the first chapter and stopped. Because I had to study for exams. But also because I was doing all the things that were under the DO NOT sections.

This week's most played song:

Elephants, Rachael Yamagata (Love the lyrics and the cellos and her voice and elephants!)

If the elephants have past lives yet are destined to always remember
It's no wonder how they scream
Like you and I they must have some temper

And I am dreaming of them on the plains
Dirtying up their beds
Watching for some sign of rain to cool their hot heads

And how dare that you send me that card when I'm doing all that I can do
You are forcing me to remember when all I want is to just forget you

If the tiger shall protect her young then tell me how did you slip by
All my instincts have failed me for once
I must have somehow slept the whole night

And I am dreaming of them with their kill
Tearing it all apart
Blood dripping from their lips and teeth sinking into heart

And how dare that you say you'll call
When you know I need some peace of mind
If you have to take sides with the animals
Won't you do it with one who is kind

And if the hawks in the trees need the dead
If you're living you don't stand a chance
For a time though you share the same bed
There are only two ends to this dance

You can flee with your wounds just in time or lie there as he feeds
Watching yourself ripped to shreds and laughing as you bleed

So for those of you falling in love keep it kind
Keep it good
Keep it right
Throw yourself in the midst of danger but keep one eye open at night

A Discourse On (Instant) Hot Chocolate

A certain instant chocolate drink (milo) plays a huge role in malaysian urban culture because it is thought to be nutritious and happens to be mega yummy. Hence, parents allow their kids to have as much of it as they want. We drink Milo as a breakfast drink, for tea, as a midnight before bed drink, when we're sick etc. (I've come to associate it with comfort food).

Unfortunately for those of us studying overseas.Or maybe it's just U.K.. Or maybe its just for us studying outside of Londy. Malaysian milo is not readily available in oriental marts. Even if they do stock a few tins, it is usually - a product of Kenya (a coarser affair. texture of the milo is closer to that of coffee. and smells funky) or a product of Singapore (very close but still not quite. so not worth buying all the time. this is rarer than the kenyan milo but easier to get than the msian ones).

Hence, I usually end up drinking instant hot chocolate readily available in all supermarkets/off-licenses. I think it is important here to define what i mean by instant hot chocolate. INSTANT hot chocolate means you just add hot water to the powder (like milo). This kind of hot chocolate is slightly harder to find in the uk. The more common ones are the kind that you stir into hot milk. I find those to be too rich. and its just too troublesome to have to microwave a mug of milk everytime you want a hot choc.

This is a line-up of instant hot chocs that I have bought in a week in search of the perfect one. Sasha has removed the lables of the first two.
From left to right:

Tesco instant hot chocolate: Acceptable. the best so far.
Cadbury instant hot choc: a disappointment. feels very artificial
Cadbury Highlights: Marginally better than the above but falls behind the tesco one.
Galaxy: yuck
Nesquik: ok but not my thing

Note: Tesco+Cadbury highlights  almost taste good.

Unfortunately ALL of them did not satisfy my fussy spoiled-by-msian-milo tastebuds untill.............

i discovered drinking chocolate at Wise Weigh at Coventry Market! 10/10! and cheaper than any of the above. it doesn't come in a bottle (it's from one of those stores where they have huge tubs of stuff and you put whatever you want in a bag and they weigh it for you) but the shop owners make their own stuff. Their muesli, pecan and maple crunch, bran flakes, nut mix are all amazing! (and cheap!) so yeah if you live in cov and need a hot chocolate drink to substitute milo-you know where to go!

Unfortunately I never got to try the waitrose instant hot chocolate so I cannot speak for it.  I will soon!

Speaking of substitutes this is what you do when you think those Duck egg blue curtain tie-backs are too expensive but the old white ones are just too boring and do not go with your new duck egg blue percale bedsheets

Dandy Lions on the path leading to my house.... such a nice name Dandee Lion. Makes me think of that kids toothpaste......kodomo lion i think?

Tomorrow i shall attempt to make M&S chewy milk chocolate chip cookies!

Pink Trees

are God's reassurance that he loves us. (like rainbows). Because He knows we get jaded by green ones sometimes. haahahahaha

Song of the week:
She's always a woman to me

She can kill with a smile
She can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child,
But she's always a woman to me

She can lead you to love
She can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth
But she'll never believe you
And she'll take what you give her, as long as it's free
Yeah, she steals like a thief
But she's always a woman to me

CHORUS:
Oh--she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh--and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind

And she'll promise you more
Than the Garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you're bleedin'
But she'll bring out the best
And the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself
Cause she's always a woman to me

LOVE the lyrics! You see parts of yourself (if you happen to be a girl)and other girls/women that you have ever known reflected in the song.  Have also been listening to Piano Man but not as much as song above.
Want to buy some Irving Penn prints for my walls. and hopefully catch the exhibit in Londy. *fingers crossed*
If not might ask Khairul to help me get one *hint hint*

UPdate on Enchanted Palace:
I wish I felt what I felt when I saw the event's poster at the tube+flyer.
The exhibits were beautiful (no pictures allowed but I secretly took some) lots of thought and hard work put into them but I wish they made more of an effort for the THEATRE bit of the theatrical exhibition. All I could gather was-some servants running around and getting into trouble looking for some missing princesses.....
and margaret and diana's exhibits were put into one room instead of a room each like the other princesses. It was as though they were running out of time/ideas and had to come up with something quick because deadline is coming up. But of course Vivienne Westwood never fails to deliver....She did A Dress for a Rebellious Princess. A puffy period westwood dress but made in a material that had a modern floral print.

This is a dress in The Room Of The World. It's like a dress shaped lantern? With lots of stuff about the world on it. Methinks it was about a princess who lived at kensington palace who liked to travel and collect curios

This is a wax house in the room of forgotten childhoods. Mainly about the childhoods of royalty. I really liked the details of the house and the silhouette effect. The wax makes it look like something forgotten in the depths of some person's mind. They also used some lace and lots of paper.
and no i did not take a picture of the westwood T.T too busy admiring it and forgot!!!
