Just a bit of Fun! Projek Kalsom Documentary Pilot for DIGI video of the year award

Main Website: Projek Kalsom

Imagine, if the concept of mentor-mentee in Projek Kalsom is applied nationwide and not just during Projek Kalsom. This mentor-mentee relationship is encouraged between facilitators and student participants during Projek Kalsom, and continues to develop into a further meaningful and informal relationship between two persons for life. If this idea can be fostered among every member of the society, many more students who are not able to attend Projek Kalsom, can benefit from such elegant, informal, information sharing with the purpose of inspiring each party into beneficial members of the society.

The documentary hopes to encourage Malaysians to have a mentor-mentee relationship whether they have been to Projek Kalsom or not. Taking inspiration from Sir Ken Robinson, he identified specific attributes of a mentor which includes:

1) Recognition - a mentor help recognizes the spark of interest or delight and can help an individual drill down to the specific components of discipline that match that individual's capacity and passion.

2) Encouragement – a mentor lead us to believe that we can achieve something that seemed improbable or impossible to us before we met them.

3) Facilitating – a mentor offer us advice and techniques, paving the way for us, and even allowing us to falter a bit while standing by to help us recover and learn from our mistakes.

4) Stretching – a mentor pushes us past what we see as our limits.

Please help us promote this idea and help Malaysia to produce a mentor-mentee community. It is also hope that through this documentary, the efforts put in by the Committee of Projek Kalsom 17, to bridge the gaps in educational, scholarship and career opportunities will receive more support nationwide.

Filemduatayar Studio shooting exercise

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Two weeks since I'm a student from Ealing Studios, my time are occupied with interesting activities. However I would say they are dependant activities. I find that 9 am to 5 pm classes are draining my energy fast and I can understand why people who work 9 to 5 job have the trouble of progressing themselves to reach their goals. This is where investing time to your goal's responsibilities becomes really important.

Therefore while preparing for my independent projects, I'm organising a shooting exercise working with new collaborations. The first of this exercise will be joined with two collaborators of students from Ealing Studios and an actress from East 15. The three of us, students from Ealing Studios will be shooting each of our ideas on Sunday, the 20th February 2011. Will be looking forward on how interesting the exercise will be.

My Neighbour The Yamadas

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
This is the only film that doesn't feel like a production by Studio Ghibli.

Story: A family comedy about the daily lives of the Yamada family told through a series of vignettes.

Why Watch
- an interesting Studio Ghibli work told not using animation drawings but using illustrative sketches, plus the interesting water colour look.
- reminiscence of the life in the 80s, 90s, how we use the telephone to ask somebody out for a date...

You have been warned
- Its totally no violent but left with humour and intelligent depictions of a very believable picture of family life which crosses cultural boundaries.

Where to catch
out on DVD but usually it is not included in the Studi Ghibli box sex.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT
This would be the first non-profit project for promoting Projek Kalsom cause and the term of this kind of project would be Filmanthropy.
What I hope to promote with this short film is for us to help our younger generation by sharing your experiences and aid them in discovering their own talents, abilities and solutions problems/challenges. That can be achieved by simply becoming a mentor, also means finding a mentor for yourself while keeping in mind age is not a boundary to not receiving advise from a younger person. This idea is presented during the last 5 minutes out of 6 in the video.
The first minute of the video took me five continuous hours of critical thinking to create a presentation of what is Projek Kalsom at the same time involving the audience into the philosophy behind the project.

PRODUCTION STILLS

DIRECTOR STATEMENT

After reaching an agreement to shoot a short fiction for the Wing Chun Association (Kung Fu association) 50th annual anniversary dinner in Malaysia, I set myself a challenge to write, direct and produce a short fiction in twenty four hours. I wasted no time and began writing at one in the morning.

Two hours later I’ve written a three page script and did few redraft in three hours and then emailed it to theater actors, Wing Chun senior students and crews. Only 2 Wing Chun seniors and a theater actor gave positive response. Worst news was the crew can’t make it and I had to contact few people who do photography and want to help out. Luckily few did response.

Eight at night, the shooting began, the best part of the production was giving the script to the actors and let them spontaneously come out with their own dialogue; since the seniors from Wing Chun association never act, this technique allows them to react to the other actor’s performance and give a believable performance themselves.

This project gives me a new level experience in production; the flexibility of the changing the script line, location, and work with unexpected cast and crew.

Simple Review - The King's Speech

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Just like how James Bond was in mid-20th Century, we were always fascinated with the gadgets. The King's Speech provide fascination into how we should express gratitude for our speech capabilities.

Story: The Prince of England wants to be able to voice out any words at anytime but he is now racing against time to prepare himself to deliver a speech as a King to the public with the help of his supporting wife and an experienced speech therapies.

Why should you watch:
- indeed an inspiring movie that connects to our own anxiety about delivering public speaking or stage fright.
- Colin Firth won best actor at the Golden Globe awards, he is definitely deserved it in his acting as a stammer and a King who is fighting against his fears.

Warn:
- Well it is an autobiography of the King of England, George the sixth. Of course you won't get any physical exhilarating but rather a psychological exhilaration.

Where to catch:
- out in Uk cinemas.
- Coming out soon in Malaysia in February.

'A woman who doesn't wear perfume has no future'- Coco Chanel

A half truth perhaps? Could also have been an ingenious-subtle way to promote Chanel perfumes to its now iconic status (like everything else Chanel). Missed the Harrods perfume sale (was too fickle and too slow at grabbing boxes) so now have to pay full price. yay me. or the perfumes that I wanted were not on sale.
But now I cannot decide which to get. Been reading mixed reviews about them by professional 'noses'

Have always liked Issey Miyake stuff, Boudoir is like a younger version of Chanel 'Chance' (in fact it is what I imagine eau fraiche to be like, but that was a disappointment) and Idylle is just so pretty!(who can resist the gold tones and the interlocking G's). Which should I get first?

Update:

Or this?

Serge Lutens- A La Nuit (Jasmine)
Sa Majeste La Rose

Have heard so much about his line of fragrances. Maybe it's time to give it a go?

Amy Chua's article on Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior

If you haven't read the article already, here's the link

Whether you are for or against what she is writing about- I love how she doesn't mince her words, doesn't hold back so that in the end you definitely have an opinion about her depiction of chinese parenting.

"Chinese parents believe that their kids owe them everything. The reason for this is a little unclear, but it's probably a combination of Confucian filial piety and the fact that the parents have sacrificed and done so much for their children."

I think for most children brought up under this 'regime'- the reason is totally clear: Do people who think that they owe nothing to their parents know how much tuition fees cost?? Your parents could have bought another car, gone on a holiday or put a down payment on another house- but they didn't.

Thankfully my mother never fully suscribed to this Chinese parenting method. They did on the surface (primary school hours were 7.30 am - 4.00 p.m. with extra tuition classes from 4.00-6.00 p.m. and homework after that) but I think in reality when they signed me up for Chinese primary school they had zero expectations and were just relieved that I managed to do ok.Now that I look back, I wished they had pushed me just a little harder so that I can now effortlessly play the violin well instead of struggling a million times before finally getting it right.
But most of all I am grateful that my parents made it fun for me (despite not being able to go for sleepovers till I was much older) I was allowed to be in school performances, go shopping after school and they were pretty cool about me not doing my homework. Just as long as I did ok in school.

Chanel News update: (did i mention that i LOVE Karl Lagerfeld? the guy is a genius!!!)

During an interview with Karl Lagerfeld and Vanessa Paradis:

You have known each other for almost twenty years but when you speak to each other in French you both still use the more formal 'vous' form of address. Why is that?

KARL: I can't stand familiarity, especially with those I like. It's a sign of indifference

Here's a video of the Paris Byzance collection. I love the mood, the details, the wearability  the casual nonchalance and most of all- the irony and genius psychedelic-ness of Pink Floyd! The more I learn about Chanel the more I love their work .

and some pictures i got off googleimages. Couldn't get a picture of their coats but you should definitely look out for those at the start of the video. If i had the moolah I would put my name down for one of those. Any chance of good 'inspired' looks coming out in high-street stores? Some of the McQueen military look inspired stuff came out a bit costume looking..

127 hours - A simple review by Khairul

Ladies and Gentlemen,
The movie that closed 2010 London Film Festival. Despite the fact I went to an old cinema with theatre style seating (the slope btw the front seat and the back is terrible), the movie made the fact ignorable.

Story: A true story of mountain climber continues his hobby of extreme adventure mapping the canyon in Utah but soon finds himself accidentally trapped his right hand under a fallen boulder in an isolated area.

Why watch:
- terribly good storytelling, the way the sound and the acting by James Franco in the movie, you will definitely feel what he feels especially during his last resolution moments =)
- a good moral value: always keep in touch with your families and leave a note where you will be gone

Warning:
- if you don't like a movie about a guy in one location most part of the movie, you'll be a BIT turn off, however you'll be occupied with what's going on in James Franco's head.

Where to catch
Out in cinemas in Uk now and coming to USA, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland and Portugal.
Malaysia - Not sure if it will come out, might have to catch it at your nearest Cetak Rompak shop.

A Prophet (2009)

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Finally watched this film having missed it in the cinema end of 2009.

Movie fans who love crime drama will love this film made by the French.

Story
- A mix Arab and French teenager  wants to serve his time in adult prison in peace but he is forced to cooperate with the head of Corsican inmates playing the dog in criminal activities inside and outside of the prison wall where he slowly gains allies.

Why watch
- Definitely this is not a hollywood crime movie but the best of French cinema.
- The performance of the actor, Tahar Rahim is worth watching.
- You are going to be surprise when you see the condition of the French's prison. Not what you think on 1st thought of prison.
- Moral values? Forget about it. But definitely a different take on criminal world.

Where to get a copy
- Out in Dvd in europe, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, UAE.
- For Malaysians, well you have to opt for Cetak Rompak shops/ download online
